Are childbirth classes really necessary? Whether it's your first birth or your fifth, are childbirth classes important for you to take? In our world, seeing a child born isn't apart of daily life. So for many women in our modern American world, childbirth carries many unknowns, besides what you see on TV and maybe a 30-second long social media post. Even if this is your 3rd child, a childbirth class may still benefit you. There are a lot of myths about childbirth classes, but there are many reasons to take one. Let's take a look at some of those myths and reasons why it should be on your list of things to make an appointment for:
It's a bunch of old ladies talking about childbirth who haven't given birth in years. ( that's what I thought💭)
Who are you calling old👵🏾? I am 26 (almost 27) years young, thank you very much! Do you know how stressful the childbirth exam was! 😂😂😂
We, childbirth educators, have to constantly be on top of the latest information and get a certain amount of continuing education credits every few years. I promise we know what we're talking about 😁😁😁 We also try to keep it interesting and not bore you!
I've already given birth.
Me too, four times actually, and I'm a childbirth educator and doula, and somehow I still am learning something new about childbirth. We are continually learning more and more about birth and how to not only improve the experience but how some things when it comes to delivery should change. A few other things to note:
Childbirth trauma is real. Childbirth trauma is one reason why second-time moms and subsequent births take a childbirth class or hire a doula.
Each birth is different. Don't you want to know how to overcome your different birth scenarios?
It's a bunch of breathing exercises.
Hahaha 😂😂😂😂. Yea, no. Thanks, Hollywood, but that's not accurate. I hope you're breathing during labor because if not, we have a whole other issue. Did you know you can lessen childbirth pain? Even without medication? Whaaaat😱😱? Yes! How do you do that? You should take a childbirth class. 😉😉😉
I don't have time to take a childbirth class.
You had time to make that baby 😂😂😂 You can always find time⌚ for childbirth classes, as they come in a variety of mediums (online, self-paced, in-person) and times that are convenient for you (from the am to the pm) you found 20 minutes to create that little bundle, I think you can squeeze some time for health education! Check out Fruit of the Womb Birth Academy for on-line/self-paced classes to take from your smartphone, tablet, or desktop.
What’s the point? 👈
I've been touching on many things. But let's get serious. America has some of the best medical care... But we have the highest amount of mothers dying ☠️☠️ in Childbirth. Most of it preventable. Mmmhmm.
Medical abuse is real. That's why you see us birth workers are like, umm, get you a doula! TAKE A CHILDBIRTH CLASS!
Black Moms🤰🏾🤱🏾 you are at the highest risk!! My mom would say if you don't get your black behind in those classes😂😂😂 Stay ahead of the statistics (go to your prenatal appointments!)
Want to know why we childbirth educators get into childbirth education? See the previous two paragraphs.
Oh, your doctor won't tell you everything...
if much of anything at all. You find out what to expect pretty much by word of mouth, googling, or book reading. But with so much information and misinformation out there, what's right? Weeelllll, how about the class?? 😁
I want a Cesarean.
Cool. So do you know what to expect? Do you know the benefits of having a Cesarean or even the risks? Did you know you are awake the entire time? What do you do when you need to sneeze with a nice surgical cut right around your stomach? Or that first poop? The effects it has on subsequent pregnancies? Hmmm...
Guess what Childbirth classes go over that! (If this is not your first rodeo with Cesarean, did you want to try for a Vaginal Birth, or is a repeat Cesarean necessary for your subsequent births?)
Ultimately, it's up to you, but I hope that it was helpful to point out how childbirth classes can positively benefit your birth! If you’re worried about pricing, many courses are very, very affordable! You may even find some free ones if you go through community programs!
In addition to childbirth classes, postpartum care classes and newborn classes can also be life-saving (figuratively and literally), and breastfeeding classes can help you feel more confident about breastfeeding!
